Casino Crime News Roundup: Man Killed in South Point Casino Was Facing Criminal Charge
The man who was killed by a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer at the South Point Hotel this month had previously faced charges in California.
According to Las Vegas TV station KTNV, Cesar Reyes II, 26, from Indio, Calif., was arrested on suspicion of possessing child pornography two days prior to the shooting on December 8. The arrest led to Reyes allegedly being put on administrative leave from his position as a probation officer in Riverside County, California.
He was incarcerated at the John Benoit Detention Center. Reyes made a $30K bond payment prior to going to Vegas.
While at the South Point Hotel Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Reyes' family notified hotel security after relatives found a seemingly suicide note at his home in California.
When trying to access the hotel room, security personnel detected a noise resembling a gun being cocked. They stepped back from the door.
Local authorities were alerted and likewise failed to persuade Reyes to unlock the door. The department dispatched a SWAT team along with expert negotiators. After efforts to make him give up were unsuccessful, SWAT team members ultimately used explosives to breach the hotel room door. At that moment, Reyes rushed toward LVMPD officers stationed in a corridor.
Reyes would not relinquish his shotgun, prompting LVMPD Officer Zachary Adam to shoot and fatally wound Reyes.
Subsequently, it was disclosed that the shotgun Reyes was gripping was unloaded. According to police, he was also equipped with a second weapon that was identified as a handgun.
In accordance with standard LVMPD protocols for officer-involved shootings, there will be an examination to determine if the officer's use of deadly force was warranted.
According to KTNV, no guests or officers sustained any injuries.
